Bytes, not characters
Amazon limits the Search Terms field to fewer than 250 bytes in most marketplaces. Plain English letters take one byte each, but accented letters take two and symbols like € take three, so a keyword list with foreign terms can go over while the character count looks fine.
This checker counts every byte, spaces included. That's the safe reading of the limit: some sellers say spaces aren't counted, but staying under 249 with everything counted can't go wrong.
What to leave out
- Words already in your title and bullets. They're indexed already, so repeating them wastes bytes.
- Repeats. One mention is enough; repeating a word doesn't boost it.
- Filler words such as “and”, “for”, “the”.
- Brand names and ASINs, yours or anyone else's.
- Subjective and temporary claims such as “best”, “cheap”, “new” or “sale”.
- Punctuation. Separate terms with a single space.
Spend the space on synonyms, alternative names, uses and audiences shoppers actually search for.

Questions people ask
What happens if I go over the limit?
Sellers report that Amazon can ignore the whole field when it's over the limit, not just the extra words. That's why the checker flags any overage.
Should I use commas between keywords?
No. Spaces are enough, and punctuation only uses up bytes.
Do I need plurals or misspellings?
Amazon's search handles many plurals and common misspellings already. Spend bytes on genuine synonyms first.
Does the order of words matter?
Less than in the title. Put your most important terms first so they survive if you ever need to trim.
