How the returns processing fee works

Most categories get a free returns allowance: a share of shipped units that can come back with no fee. Only returns above that threshold, in a rolling three-month window, are charged. Apparel and shoes have no threshold: every return is charged. Rates last checked 30 Sep 2026.

Returns charged = returns − (units shipped × category threshold), rounded up, floored at zero

Worked example (the calculator's starting values)

Category and threshold
Home and Kitchen, 8.1%
Shipped / returned
600 units shipped, 66 returned (11% return rate)
Allowance
600 × 8.1% = 48.6 returns
Fee per charged return
$3.70 (Large standard, 1 lb+ to 1.25 lb)

18 returns above the threshold × $3.70 = $66.60 for the month.

Apparel and shoes: no threshold

Apparel and shoes pay the returns processing fee on every customer return, with no free allowance. Switching the calculator to the apparel preset (800 shipped, 120 returned, 10 oz) charges all 120 returns at $2.19 each, for $262.80. Compare that with the same volume in a category with a threshold, like Toys and Games at 6% returns (1,000 shipped, 60 returned): only 13 returns clear the threshold, costing $39.65.

Using the result

  • Find your size tier and weight in the Fee Preview report, or work them out with the FBA calculator.
  • Read the return reasons. The FBA customer returns report shows why buyers sent items back. Fixing the top reason (wrong size, damage in transit, not as described) cuts both the fee and lost sales.
  • Products shipping under 25 units a month are exempt from the fee, apparel excluded.

Questions people ask

What is Amazon's returns processing fee?

A per-unit fee charged on customer returns that exceed a free-returns threshold for the product's category, based on shipped units over a rolling three-month window. Apparel and shoes have no threshold and pay it on every return.

How is the return rate threshold set?

Amazon sets a free-returns percentage per category, from about 2.9% (Grocery) to over 12% (some apparel-adjacent and electronics accessory categories). Returns above that share of shipped units are charged.

Is the fee the same as the FBA fulfillment fee?

No, it's a separate per-unit fee, priced by size tier and shipping weight on its own rate card, similar in shape to the fulfillment fee but with different numbers.

Does the fee apply to small sellers?

No. Products that ship fewer than 25 units in a month are exempt, except in apparel and shoes.

How can I lower this fee?

Bring the return rate down toward the category threshold: check the FBA customer returns report for the top return reasons and fix sizing charts, packaging or product descriptions that cause avoidable returns.
