How Amazon decides your size tier
Amazon sorts every FBA unit into a size tier using its packaged dimensions and weight. The tier and the shipping weight together set your fulfillment fee. Rates last checked 30 Sep 2026, against Amazon's 2026 US rate card (in effect since 15 Jan 2026).
| Size tier | Max weight | Longest side | Median side | Shortest side | Length + girth |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Small standard | 16 oz | 15 in | 12 in | 0.75 in | No limit |
| Large standard | 20 lb | 18 in | 14 in | 8 in | No limit |
| Small bulky | 50 lb | 37 in | 28 in | 20 in | 130 in |
| Large bulky | 50 lb | 59 in | 33 in | 33 in | 130 in |
Anything that misses the large bulky limits is extra-large, priced in four bands: 0 to 50 lb, 50+ to 70 lb, 70+ to 150 lb and 150+ lb. Girth is 2 × (median side + shortest side).
- Small standard: fees use unit weight only.
- Large standard, bulky and extra-large up to 150 lb: fees use the greater of unit weight and dimensional weight.
- Extra-large 150+ lb: fees use unit weight only.
- Price band: under $10 gets Low-Price FBA rates, $10 to $50 (including exactly $10 and $50) is the middle band, and over $50 costs more.
Worked example (the calculator's starting values)
- Package
- 10 × 6 × 3 in, 1.2 lb
- Size tier
- Large standard (shortest side over 0.75 in)
- Dimensional weight
- 180 ÷ 139 = 1.29 lb
- Shipping weight
- 1.29 lb, which beats the 1.2 lb unit weight
- Weight and price band
- 1.25+ to 1.5 lb, $10 to $50
Fulfillment fee $5.42, or $5.61 with the 3.5% fuel and logistics surcharge. From 15 Oct 2026 to 14 Jan 2027 the peak rate is $5.73 ($5.93 with the surcharge).
Getting into a cheaper tier
The big savings come from crossing a tier line, not from shaving an ounce. The calculator lists the limits that keep you out of the next tier down.
- Flat items. Large standard starts once the shortest side passes 0.75 in. A slim product packed 1 in deep pays large standard rates; packed thinner, it can drop to small standard.
- Bulky items. Small bulky (up to 37 × 28 × 20 in) is cheaper than large bulky. A smaller carton or a knock-down design can move a product across.
- Air in the box. Dimensional weight charges for volume, so a carton that's too big can push a light item up several weight bands.
- Check what Amazon has on file. Download the Fee Preview report in Seller Central and look at the
product-size-tierfield for each FNSKU. If Amazon measured it wrong, use the FBA Remeasurement and Reimbursement Tool.
What the fee shown doesn't include
- Overmax. Extra-large items up to 150 lb that are over 96 in long, or over 130 in length plus girth, pay an extra Overmax handling fee. The calculator flags these but doesn't add that fee.
- Bulky packaging. Bulky rates assume the item ships in its own packaging. Since 15 Jan 2026, bulky items that can't ship in their own packaging pay a packaging fee, which Amazon says averages $2.07 per unit.
- The surcharge. Amazon added a 3.5% fuel and logistics surcharge to fulfillment fees on 17 Apr 2026 and calls it temporary. Switch it off in the calculator if Amazon removes it.
- Your own store pricing. Add this fee, the referral fee (15% in most categories) and ad costs to see your Amazon price floor. Then set store prices from there: in Shopify, open the product from Products; in WooCommerce, go to Products, edit the product and use Product data > General.
Questions people ask
What are the Amazon size tiers in 2026?
Small standard, large standard, small bulky, large bulky and four extra-large bands (0 to 50, 50+ to 70, 70+ to 150 and 150+ lb). Small bulky is new: on 15 Jan 2026 Amazon split the old large bulky tier in two.
How do I calculate dimensional weight for Amazon?
Multiply length × width × height in inches and divide by 139. For bulky and extra-large items the width and height count as at least 2 inches.
Why is my light product large standard?
Small standard also caps the package at 15 × 12 × 0.75 in. Most light products land in large standard because the package is thicker than three-quarters of an inch.
Does Amazon use unit weight or dimensional weight?
Small standard and extra-large 150+ lb use unit weight only. Every other tier uses whichever is greater.
Where do I see the size tier Amazon has assigned?
In the Fee Preview report (the product-size-tier field) or by looking the product up in Amazon's Revenue Calculator.
