How the monthly storage bill is worked out
FBA storage is billed monthly per cubic foot, with two possible surcharges on top: one for holding too much stock relative to what sells (utilization) and one for stock that's sat too long (aged inventory). Rates last checked 30 Sep 2026.
Worked example (the calculator's starting values)
- Package
- 10 × 6 × 3 in, standard-size, 400 units, January to September
- Volume per unit
- 180 ÷ 1,728 = 0.104 cu ft
- Base rate
- $0.78 per cu ft (standard-size, off-peak)
Base monthly storage fee: 400 × 0.104 × $0.78 = $32.50. About $0.08 per unit stored.
The same 400 units in October to December, at the $2.40 peak rate, cost $100.00 instead: storage triples in Q4 for standard-size items.
The two surcharges
- Utilization surcharge. Applies to units aged over 30 days once your storage utilization ratio (shown on the FBA Dashboard) passes 22 weeks of cover. At 28 to 36 weeks it adds $0.76 per cubic foot for standard-size items; the calculator's example at that band on 320 aged units adds $38.67, bringing the month's total to $71.17.
- Aged inventory surcharge. Charged per unit past 181 days old, checked on the 15th of the month, and it's the greater of a per-cubic-foot and a per-unit rate. At 366 to 455 days on 120 units, the example adds $86.25, for a total of $118.75.
- New sellers under 365 days, small storers and some other cases are exempt from the utilization surcharge; check the FBA Dashboard for your own ratio rather than assuming.
Keeping the bill down
- Ship smaller and more often instead of sending months of stock at once. It lowers your utilization ratio and reduces how much can age past 180 days.
- Check FBA Inventory weekly for the days-of-supply and aged-inventory columns, and submit a removal or disposal order by 11:59 p.m. PT on the 14th to dodge next month's aged inventory charge.
- Clear slow stock before Q4. Storage triples from October to December, so units that will still be sitting there in October cost far more to hold than to remove in September.
Questions people ask
How much does Amazon charge for FBA storage?
$0.78 per cubic foot per month for standard-size items from January to September, and $2.40 in October to December. Oversize items are cheaper per cubic foot; dangerous goods cost more.
What is the storage utilization surcharge?
An extra per-cubic-foot charge on units aged over 30 days, once your storage utilization ratio (shown on the FBA Dashboard) passes 22 weeks of cover. It rises in bands up to 52+ weeks.
What is the aged inventory surcharge?
A charge on units that have sat in a fulfillment center more than 180 days, checked on the 15th of each month. It's the greater of a per-cubic-foot rate and a per-unit rate, and it rises the longer stock sits.
Why is my Q4 storage bill so much higher?
Amazon's base storage rate for standard-size items rises from $0.78 to $2.40 per cubic foot from October to December, about three times the rest of the year.
How do I avoid the aged inventory fee?
Submit a removal or disposal order for units approaching 181 days old before the 15th of the month, or ship in smaller batches so less stock ages that far in the first place.
