Matched from the real taxonomy, not invented

This tool searches Google's own product taxonomy file for categories that share words with your product, hands the model that shortlist as candidates, and tells it to pick only from those candidates or from the top-level categories. It never lets the model invent a category ID or path, which is the failure mode of asking a general AI tool to "guess" a Google category.

It picks the most specific category that's really true for the product, matching what the product is rather than its material, audience or occasion (gold earrings are "Earrings", not a metal category), and ignores a shared word that means something else, such as a "hoop" earring versus a basketball hoop.

The attribute is optional

Google assigns every product a category automatically from your title, description, price, brand and GTIN. Setting google_product_category yourself matters mainly when Google gets it wrong, when you want to organize Shopping campaigns by category, or for alcoholic beverages, where Google requires the correct category for compliance.

Using the result

  1. 01

    Shopify

Set each product's Category on the product page in your admin, using Shopify's own taxonomy. If you paste in the exact English Google category path or ID, Shopify maps it to its own matching category.

  2. 02

    WooCommerce

WooCommerce has no Google category field of its own. Paste the ID into your feed plugin's Google product category setting, or add a google_product_category column to your feed.

  3. 03

    Merchant Center feed

Add a google_product_category column and give each product either the ID or the full path, never both.

Double-check any match against Google's own taxonomy file before you publish a feed.

Questions people ask

Can it invent a category if nothing matches well?

No. If nothing in the taxonomy shares a real word with your product, it falls back to the closest top-level category and says so in its reasoning, rather than making up an ID.

Do I need to set this attribute at all?

Usually not. Google assigns a category automatically. Set it yourself mainly when Google gets it wrong, for Shopping campaign organization, or for alcoholic beverages.

How does this connect to Shopify's own Category field?

Shopify uses its own product taxonomy, but if you enter a Google category's exact English path or ID, Shopify maps it to the matching Shopify category for you.

Best match + alternatives, or feed column: which do I use?

Best match + alternatives if you're checking a handful of products by hand. Feed column if you're building a column to paste straight into a spreadsheet or feed.

How many products can I match at once?

Up to 8 per run. Paste more and the tool tells you how many to run again separately.
