Shopify Canonical Checker
Check a Shopify product URL for duplicate /collections/*/products/* paths and variant URL canonical issues.
Why Shopify products get duplicate URLs
A Shopify product can be reached through several URLs: its plain /products/handle page, and one /collections/collection-handle/products/handle URL for every collection it's in. Add ?variant=123456 for a specific variant and the same product can have dozens of valid, working URLs.
That's normal and expected, links from a collection page are supposed to go through the collection path. The fix isn't to remove those links, it's to make sure every one of those pages points its <link rel="canonical"> tag at the single plain /products/handle URL, so Google indexes one version.
If the canonical tag is wrong
- Check your theme. Shopify's default product template sets the canonical tag correctly. A custom
<head>snippet, an SEO app, or a page builder app can override it, sometimes incorrectly. - Look for apps that rewrite `<head>`. Some SEO or page-builder apps inject their own canonical tag. If two conflicting tags exist, browsers use the last one in the HTML.
- Variant URLs: the canonical should never include
?variant=. If it does, every variant looks like a separate page to Google.
Questions people ask
Is it a problem that my product has many URLs?
No. Multiple URLs reaching the same product page is normal on Shopify. The canonical tag is what tells search engines which one is the "real" page to index.
What should the canonical tag actually say?
The plain product URL, like https://yourstore.com/products/example, with no /collections/ prefix and no ?variant= parameter.
Can I fix this myself in the theme code?
If you're comfortable editing Liquid, check the product template (or theme.liquid) for a canonical <link> tag and make sure nothing overrides Shopify's default. Most of the time the fix is removing a conflicting tag added by an app or a past customization.
Does this affect my Google Shopping listings too?
Yes indirectly: Merchant Center prefers the canonical landing page URL. A wrong canonical can cause mismatches between your feed's link and what Google considers the page's real URL.
