Shopify Redirect Generator
Turn a list of old URLs into Shopify's URL redirect import file, with pattern rules for WooCommerce, Wix and Squarespace moves.
Your details
Your redirect import file (Content → Menus → URL redirects → Import)
Redirect from,Redirect to
/product/merino-crew-sweater/,/products/merino-crew-sweater
/product/wool-hiking-socks/,/products/wool-hiking-socks
/product-category/knitwear/,/collections/knitwear
/product-category/accessories/hats/,/collections/hats
/about-us/,/pages/about
/shipping-returns/,/policies/refund-policy
/blog/how-to-wash-merino/,/blogs/news/how-to-wash-merino7 redirects ready. Import in Shopify admin: Content → Menus → URL redirects → Import, choose this file, review and click Import redirects.
Shopify only redirects URLs that return a 404. If a page, product or collection still exists at an old URL, its redirect won't fire.
The file Shopify expects
Shopify's redirect import takes a CSV with two columns, Redirect from and Redirect to. The old URL is a path on your store. The target can be a path such as /products/merino-crew-sweater or a full URL.
The generator's default (a WooCommerce move)
- /product/merino-crew-sweater/
- /products/merino-crew-sweater
- /product-category/accessories/hats/
- /collections/hats
- /about-us/
- /pages/about (set by hand)
Seven old URLs become seven redirects: two products and two categories through the WooCommerce rules, three pages mapped by hand.
Pattern rules
Shopify has no wildcard redirects, so the generator expands patterns into one row per URL before you import.
| Moving from | Old URL | New URL |
|---|---|---|
| WooCommerce | /product/{slug}/ | /products/{slug} |
| WooCommerce | /product-category/…/{slug}/ | /collections/{slug} |
| Wix | /product-page/{slug} | /products/{slug} |
| Wix | /post/{slug} | /blogs/news/{slug} |
| Squarespace | /…/p/{slug} | /products/{slug} |
Write your own with * for one part of the path, for example /store/* -> /products/*. Use ** for nested folders; it keeps the last part. Your rules run before the platform rules, and any line with its own target skips the rules.
Importing and checking
- 01
Import
In Shopify admin go to Content → Menus, click URL redirects, then Import. Add the file, upload it, review, and click Import redirects.
- 02
Spot-check
Open a handful of old URLs, especially ones with a query string. Shopify says URLs with
?might not redirect as expected. - 03
Watch Search Console
Check the Pages report for new 404s over the following weeks and add redirects for any you missed.
- Redirects only fire on 404s. If something still exists at the old URL, its redirect is ignored.
- Chains are flattened. If A goes to B and B goes to C, the file sends A straight to C.
- Limits. Up to 100,000 redirects, or 20,000,000 on Shopify Plus.
Questions people ask
What columns does Shopify's redirect CSV need?
Two: Redirect from and Redirect to, in that order, with a header row.
Does Shopify support wildcard redirects?
No. Each old URL needs its own row. The pattern rules here expand a list of URLs into those rows for you.
Should I keep the trailing slash?
The file keeps old URLs exactly as you paste them. If old links were shared both with and without the slash, turn on the option that adds both versions.
Where do I get the list of old URLs?
Export them from your old platform's sitemap, from Search Console's Pages report, or from a crawl of the old site.
