The European Accessibility Act, briefly

The European Accessibility Act (Directive (EU) 2019/882) sets accessibility requirements for products and services sold in the EU, including ecommerce. Its requirements have applied since 28 June 2025. Micro-enterprises, fewer than 10 staff and under 2 million euros annual turnover, are exempt. This isn't legal advice; check the current rules for your specific business and market.

The Act doesn't invent a new standard from scratch; in practice, meeting WCAG (the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines) at a reasonable level is the common way businesses demonstrate compliance for a website.

What this automated scan covers

  • Whether the page declares its language, so screen readers use the right pronunciation.
  • Whether pinch-to-zoom is disabled in the viewport tag.
  • Images missing an alt attribute.
  • Form fields with no associated label.
  • More than one <h1>, or none, which confuses screen reader navigation.
  • Generic link text like "click here", which means nothing out of context.
  • Icon-only buttons with no accessible name.
  • Videos with no caption track.
  • Whether a skip-to-content link exists.

This is a heuristic scan of the page's HTML, not a full audit. It can't check color contrast, keyboard focus order, or whether interactive components (a size chart popup, a carousel) actually work with a keyboard or screen reader, all of which need a real browser and, ideally, a person using assistive technology to test properly.

Questions people ask

Does passing this scan mean I'm compliant with the EAA?

No. This checks a handful of automatable HTML issues. Full compliance also covers things this can't test automatically, like color contrast and keyboard operability. Treat a clean scan as a starting point, not a certification.

Am I exempt if I'm a small store?

Micro-enterprises (fewer than 10 employees and under 2 million euros in annual turnover) are exempt under the Act. Check the current official guidance for your specific situation, since exemptions and their conditions can be detailed.

What's the single most common issue this finds?

Missing alt text on images is usually the most common and the easiest to fix: add a short, accurate description of what's in the image, or an empty alt="" for purely decorative images.

Does this apply to a US-only store?

The EAA applies to products and services placed on the EU market, so it matters if you sell to EU customers regardless of where your business is based. A US-only store not selling into the EU wouldn't be in scope for this specific law, though general accessibility best practice (and other laws, like the ADA) still applies.
