Shopify Markets Hreflang Checker
Check a Shopify Markets store's hreflang tags for valid codes, a self-reference, an x-default, and links that actually point back.
What gets checked
- Tags exist at all. Shopify Markets adds them automatically for domains, subdomains and subfolders you've set up, so a missing set usually means a market has no web presence assigned yet.
- Valid codes: language codes (and optional region) in the right format, like
enoren-GB. - x-default present, so visitors outside your listed markets get a sensible page.
- No duplicates: the same language code shouldn't appear twice.
- Reciprocal links: Google requires that if page A lists page B as an alternate, page B lists page A back. This check fetches a sample of the alternate URLs and confirms they link back.
If tags are missing or broken
- 01
Check Markets setup
Settings → Markets. Each market needs a domain, subdomain or subfolder assigned before Shopify generates hreflang tags for it.
- 02
Check for an app override
A translation or SEO app can add its own (sometimes conflicting) hreflang tags. Two sets on the same page is worse than one correct set.
- 03
Re-check after publishing
Changes to Markets can take a few minutes to reach the live storefront.
Questions people ask
Why are my hreflang tags missing even though I have multiple Markets set up?
Shopify only generates hreflang tags for a market once it has a domain, subdomain or subfolder assigned to it, not for a market that only changes currency or pricing.
What does "reciprocal" mean here?
If your US page lists your UK page as an alternate, your UK page needs to list the US page back. Google ignores hreflang annotations that aren't reciprocal, so a one-directional link is effectively wasted.
How many alternate pages does this check fetch?
Up to four, to keep the check fast. If you have more markets than that, spot-check the rest by viewing page source on a couple of others.
Does a wrong hreflang tag hurt my ranking?
It doesn't cause a penalty, but Google may simply ignore it and show shoppers the wrong regional page, which is a lost sale even if the ranking itself is unaffected.
