What Google asks for in a title

The title in your product feed is the main text Google uses to match your product to a search. Google's rules for it are short:

  • Up to 150 characters. Google suggests using the space for details that define the product.
  • Important details first. Shoppers usually see only the first 70 characters or fewer, depending on screen size.
  • Describe the product on the landing page, including what sets each variant apart, such as color or size.
  • No promotional text: no prices, sale wording, shipping or delivery dates.
  • No capital letters for emphasis, no extra spaces, and no synonyms or strings of search terms.
  • Keep color names as they are on your product page. Don't rename "Midnight Sky" to "Dark Blue" in the feed.

Title formulas by category

Google's advice is to put key details at the front and to include attributes such as brand, gender, age group, size and color. These formulas turn that advice into a starting order for common categories. They're a convention, not a Google rule, so skip any part you don't have.

CategoryFormulaExample
ApparelBrand + Gender + Material, style or fit + Product type + Color + SizeHarbour & Co Men's Linen Short Sleeve Shirt - Sand - M
ElectronicsBrand + Model + Product type + Key specs + ColorAurel Pulse 3 Wireless Noise Cancelling Earbuds Bluetooth 5.3 - Black

Health & beautyBrand + Line + Product type + Skin type or ingredient + SizeCalm Skin Co Daily Face Serum with 15% Vitamin C Fragrance Free 30 ml

Sporting goodsBrand + Product type + Sport + Key attribute + SizeSummit Trekking Poles for Hiking Carbon Fiber - 100-135 cm
Toys & gamesBrand + Product type + Theme + Age range + Piece countBlockhaus Building Set Space Station Ages 8+ 520 Pieces

The tool separates color and size with a spaced hyphen, as in Google's own example title, and never uses commas, colons or double quotes. That keeps each title safe to paste into a feed file or sheet.

Putting AI-written titles in your feed

Google requires titles created with generative AI to be submitted in the structured_title attribute, with the digital source type set to trained_algorithmic_media, instead of title. Every result includes that value, such as trained_algorithmic_media:Harbour & Co Men's Linen Short Sleeve Shirt - Sand - M.

One catch: when a product has both title and structured_title, Google uses title. So the new value only takes effect where your feed doesn't also send a title for that product.

  1. 01

    Single product

Copy the Feed value for structured_title block into the structured_title column or field for that product.

  2. 02

    Bulk

Choose Bulk and paste up to 10 products, one per line, as ID | current title | extra details, using the IDs from Merchant Center. Paste the CSV result into cell A1 of a Google Sheet and use Data → Split text to columns.

  3. 03

    Swap the column

In a sheet or file you manage, use a structured_title column for the products you changed and remove their title value.

  4. 04

    Feed apps

If a Shopify or WooCommerce app builds your feed, check whether it can send structured_title before you rely on it. An app that keeps sending title will override it.

Questions people ask

How long should a Google Shopping title be?

Google allows up to 150 characters and suggests using them for details that define the product. Only the first 70 or so usually show, so put the brand, product type and key attribute there.

Should I stuff keywords into my feed titles?

No. Use the name shoppers use for the product, once. Google advises against adding synonyms or strings of search terms to titles.

Can I put "free shipping" or "sale" in the title?

No. Google doesn't allow promotional text such as prices, sale wording or shipping in titles. Use the price, sale price and shipping attributes instead.

Do I have to label AI-written titles?

Yes. Google requires titles created with generative AI to go in the structured_title attribute with the digital source type trained_algorithmic_media. The tool gives you that value ready to paste.

How do I check the character count?

AI models count characters loosely, so check before you upload. Paste the title into the SMS character counter, which counts every character, spaces included.
