Sitemap URL Extractor
Pull every URL out of a sitemap.xml, including sitemap indexes, as a plain list for redirect mapping.
Sitemaps and sitemap indexes
A sitemap.xml file lists a site's URLs, each inside a <loc> tag. Large sites often use a sitemap index instead, a file that just lists the URLs of several smaller sitemaps. This tool detects a sitemap index automatically and reads its child sitemaps too, up to 6 fetches per run in total (the index itself counts as one).
Enter a sitemap URL directly, or just your domain: the tool tries /sitemap.xml on it automatically.
What to do with the list
- Capture your old site's URLs before a migration, so you have a full list to build redirects from.
- Feed a batch of them into the bulk redirect checker once redirects are live.
- Compare an old sitemap export against your new site's structure to spot pages you haven't redirected yet.
Pitfalls
- A large sitemap index with many child sitemaps won't be read in full in one run (6 fetches per run): run it again to pick up more, or work through the child sitemap URLs listed in the result.
- This reads whatever is live right now. Run it before you take the old site offline.
Questions people ask
Does this work on any platform?
Yes, it just reads standard sitemap XML, so it works on Shopify, WooCommerce, Wix, Squarespace or any other site with a sitemap.xml.
What if my site doesn't have a sitemap.xml?
Most ecommerce platforms generate one automatically (Shopify at /sitemap.xml, WooCommerce/Yoast or Rank Math similarly). Check your platform's SEO settings if it's missing.
Can I extract URLs from an image or video sitemap?
It reads any <loc> tag, so it works on those too, though it won't pull out the extra image or video metadata alongside them.
How many URLs can it handle?
As many as the sitemap and its child sitemaps contain, within the 6-fetch budget per run. Re-run it to continue through a very large index.
